a scary number

I just got off the phone to an architect after discussing my plans for the house with her.  It was a good conversation that enabled me to get a good idea of what I would be looking at with regards to the cost of building my house...  and scary.  Realistically I'm looking at $65,000.  Yep, there are three zeros there...  time to tighten the belt a bit!

  1. That's an architect's opinion. Did she factor in found objects, tip shop finds, hard rubbish pick up?

At least it gives you a number to work towards and then see what happens int he meantime.

  2. exactly - calmed down a bit now and may have overestimated a tad too... but no, she was taking into account all new stuf, has no knowledge of building with cob and had other people doing most of the work. it does give me an idea - her guess was an averge of $1500/square metre going on what she has built previously... i reckon i can do it cheaper

  3. Sure you can do it cheaper, especially if she was assuming you'd be hiring people to do it all for you: labour is an expensive part of the building process, so you'd save heaps by doing most of it yourself with some fiends to help (our hands will be up when you want volunteer labourers). And even if it does cost that much, at least you have something to plan for and work towards, which has got to be good.

  4. I meant friends, obviously, not fiends. I don't really think you are conjuring up the forces of darkness for cob house building duty.
